Islamabad International Film Festival: Redefining Pakistani Cinema on a Global Stage

The Islamabad International Film Festival (IIFF) is rapidly emerging as a powerhouse in the global film circuit, blending ambitious vision with grassroots innovation. Founded by 22-year-old Hassaan Imtiaz, an award-winning filmmaker known for his resourceful storytelling, IIFF has shattered expectations by attracting over 2,200 submissions across just two editions—a feat that underscores its growing influence.
With its second edition set to take place in Istanbul, Turkey, IIFF is making a strategic pivot to amplify its international reach. The 2025 edition has already received more than 1,000 entries from 96 countries—a clear sign of its expanding global footprint.
What sets IIFF apart is its commitment to youth-driven narratives and regional collaboration, creating a platform that bridges South Asian talent with global audiences.

Empowering the Next Generation
IIFF’s mission extends beyond film screenings. Through workshops and networking sessions, the festival nurtures emerging voices and equips young filmmakers with tools to tackle contemporary issues through cinema.
By partnering with Hevo Studios—a production house behind award-winning indie films like 509 and Zaki—IIFF offers mentorship and industry resources that help new creators flourish.
Hassaan’s own journey epitomizes resilience. At 19, he entered the industry with no connections, later directing 509—a film shot on a smartphone with a $10 budget—that went on to win 12 international awards.

His story, described by The US Times as a “compelling narrative of overcoming adversity,” fuels IIFF’s ethos: that creativity can transcend budgetary limitations.
By enlisting Pakistani stars like Naema Butt, Ally Khan, and Noor ul Hassan as brand ambassadors, the festival amplifies regional voices while fostering a sense of cultural pride and connectivity.

Backed by Hevo Studios and experiencing a 300% surge in submissions since its first edition, IIFF is poised to become a transformative force in South Asian cinema.
